SHELTON -- The Trumbull boys hockey team fought hard for three periods but was clearly outmatched by its cross-town opponent as St. Joseph came away with a 6-4 win in an FCIAC match Wednesday night at The Rinks at Shelton.

St. Joseph outshot Trumbull 38-9 in the first two periods and jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the end of the second. Vito Roca chipped in with two goals in the second period. The Cadets also benefited from a multiple-point night from forward Sean Hurley, who contributed with an assist in the first period and a goal in the second.

"We got more pucks to the net," St. Joseph head coach Marty Crouse said. "I like to force any goaltender we play to handle the puck. Make things happen. I don't like to get outshot. If you don't put the puck on net, you're not going to get any opportunities."

St. Joseph avoided a three-game skid after losing to Ridgefield in its last two games. Prior to those two losses, the Cadets had won five straight.

With the win, St. Joseph improved to 7-4 on the season as it enters the second half of its schedule.

"We knew Trumbull wasn't going to just lay down. We needed to win tonight and we accomplished that," Crouse said. "We just have to get back to our winning ways and hopefully we start now. Hopefully we can finish out and make a real run for it."

Trumbull never backed off and used the third period to cut into the lead. Eagles captain Sean Gallagher set the tone for his squad's resiliency. His team endured a deluge of shots in the first period, yet were down one goal with 1:14 remaining when Christian Keator buried a wrister for a 2-0 lead. Gallagher answered back 42 seconds into the second period to cut the lead to one.

"We don't have the most talented group but the kids work hard and didn't quit," Trumbull head coach Greg Maxey said. "But I give them credit, they came out and made it a game in the third. I thought we finished more at the end, we executed on some nice plays and it paid off."
