Wrestling roundup: No. 1 Warde improves to 13-0
The state's newly ranked No. 1 wrestling program, the Warde Mustangs, defeated John Jay (N.Y.) High School 43-27 in a dual match Tuesday in New York.
Winners for Warde included: Alex Steele (113) by major decision (10-0), Jack Price (120) by decision (4-2), Tim Kane (126) by pin at 2:36, Aaron Beinstein (132) by pin at 2:35, Charlie Kane (138) by pin at 1:30, Dan Ebert (145) by decision (3-0), Aaron Addotey (182) by decision (9-4), Alex Lobsenz (195) by pin at 2:34 and Tyler Mazut (heavyweight) by forfeit.
Mike Correia (106) lost by pin at 1:21, Devin Barada (152) lost by pin at 2:33, Tallis Stanton (160) lost by pin at 4:50, Jack Whiting (170) lost by pin at 3:20 and Jordi Proskinitopoulos (220) lost by decision (3-1).
Warde improved to 13-0 on the season with the win.
The Mustangs also finished second at the recent John D. Gorman tournament in Cumberland, R.I.. Tim Kane (126) and Charlie Kane (138) brought home titles for Warde.
The Ludlowe wrestling team recently finished fourth in the Colter-Abely Mid-Season Classic at Xavier High School. Trumbull captured the overall title in the 16-team field with 224 points. The Falcons compiled a total of 140 points.
Ludlowe had two class champions -- Bobby Clark (138 pounds) and Marcus Sherrod (145 pounds) and also had two class runner-ups, George Wales (120 pounds) and Chase Lind (152 pounds). Austin Sherman (113 pounds) and Bill Stapelton (heavyweight) finished third.
The Notre Dame wresting team recently competed in a match against New London and Cheshire, falling 60-19 to New London and 51-30 to Cheshire.
Against New London, the Lancers were forced to forfeit in the 106, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145 and 152-pound weight classes. Notre Dame's Jacob Castillo (113 pounds) captured a major decision over Seth Ortiz 16-2, while Tyler McMillian (195) pinned Anson Wang at 2:14, Bill Kelly (220) defeated Renel Michael 6-1 and heavyweight Hakim Fleming pinned Oscar Calcano at 5:13. Tekarah Coward (152), Eric Monies (170) and Wesley DaSilva (182) all lost by pins.
Against Cheshire, again Notre Dame had to forfeit matches at 106, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145 and 152 pound classes. Jacob Castillo (113) won by pin at 3:03, Wesley DaSilva (182) won by pin 26 seconds, Tyler McMillian (195) won by pin in 46 seconds and both Bill Kelly (220) and Hakim Fleming (heavyweight) won by forfeit. Tekarah Coward lost 9-3 at 160 pounds and Matt Merced (170) lost by pin at 1:52.
Fairfield Prep stepped outside the Southern Connecticut Conference and into the FCIAC for a tri-match against New Cannan and Darien, winning both, defeating the Rams 51-35 and the Blue Wave 72-12.
