Bigelow Tea 'Challenge' hits the road for charity Sept. 26
The 23rd annual Bigelow Tea Community Challenge road races, a charity event sponsored by the Fairfield-based company, will take place Sept. 26.
The Community Challenge -- including a 5K race, a 2-mile non-competitive fitness walk and a children's "Fun Run" -- will start at the Wakeman Boys and Girls Club on Center Street in Southport. About 1,000 participants are expected.
Advance signups can take place via the Bigelow Tea website -- www.bigelowtea.com -- and a registration table will be set up at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. The Fun Run starts 9, followed by the 2-mile walk at 9:30 and the 5K road race at 10:10 a.m. An awards ceremony will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Open to the public, the event last year raised $80,000. Beneficiaries over the years include the Fairfield Senior Center, Sandcastle playground, Wakeman Boys and Girls Club, Fairfield YMCA of Fairfield, Mercy Learning Center, Cardinal Shehan Center, Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County, Center for Women & Families, Janus House, Connecticut Food Bank, Operation Hope, Grasmere Eldercare Center, Caroline House and Bridgeport Rescue Mission.
All registration fees include a free tee-shirt for the first 1,000 registrants, a gift bag, refreshments and a chance to win raffle prizes, including two round-trip airline tickets.
