The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive on May 14 with all items donated locally to go to Operation Hope, the local homeless shelter and community kitchen.

Residents can leave their non-perishable items by the mailbox to be picked up that day by mail carriers, who will bring them to the agency for distribution.

The agency at 636 Old Post Road has been the recipient of pantry items for the last 17 years. The association's Fairfield branch, which includes Southport, collected 44,000 pounds of food last year.

According to the NALC's website, the group collected approximately 73.1 million pounds of food nationwide. The drive is the largest one-day food drive in the nation that reaches all 50 states, including Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, according to the association.
