Angela Walker, of Fairfield, was awarded one of three United Technologies/YMCA Wesley A. Kuhrt Youth Citizenship Awards for Community Service conferred statewide at the YMCA of Greater Hartford annual meeting. The awards are named in memory of the late Wesley A. Kuhrt, president of Sikorsky Aircraft and a former United Technologies Corp. vice president.
Walker, a junior at Fairfield Warde High School and a member of the Camp Jewell YMCA, has helped a number of organizations, including the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. She also raised $1,000 for a teacher battling leukemia by creating a Facebook group that grew beyond 193 current students to include past students, teachers and friends. The awards are presented annually to young YMCA program participants ages 15 to 20, who have shown a commitment to volunteer service.
