PAL's snapper-blue derby hooks kids on fishing
Fairfield kids braved overcast skies and whipping winds Sunday to compete in the Police Athletic League Snapper-Blues Derby at the South Benson Marina.
The young fishermen, boys and girls ages 3 to 15, were given bait from Jimmy O's Bait and Tackle in Bridgeport, and headed to the Ash Creek inlet to try and catch snapper bluefish. Awards were given in several categories. The event was free, as are all of the PAL's activities. Officer Scott Sudora organized the tournament, which lasted from noon to 3 p.m.
Awards included gift certificates, while a raffle provided other prizes.
The following awards were presented to the young fishermen: Beau, 6, first snapper blue; Madelyn, 5, first snapper blue; Charlie and P.J., most snapper blues, tied with two fish; Madelyn, most snapper blues, two; Noah, 13, biggest fish other than a snapper blue with a 28-inch eel, and Sara, 12, smallest fish other than snapper blue with a 1 5/8-inch mummy chub.
