FAIRFIELD — For the second time in less than two months, a squirrel left more than 1,000 United Illuminating customers in Fairfield without power.

Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Fairfield fire officials said UI reported 1,323 customers in Fairfield were without power. UI sent a crew to the area to find the source of the outage.

Within 15 minutes, UI restored power to all but 216 customers as the utility company’s crew continued to hunt for the source of the outage. Fire officials did not indicate what part of town was impacted by the outage.

At 9 a.m., power was restored to all customers. Fire officials said a squirrel shorted out a circuit. There was no word on the condition of the squirrel.

Eight weeks ago, on April 18, a squirrel caused a power outage that affected 1,177 UI customers in the Greenfield Hill area of town. In that incident, complete power restoration took several hours.
