Two kayakers helped two swimmers to safety when they were “in distress” close to Silver Sands State Park on Saturday, according to Milford’s fire department.

After the current propelled the swimmers further into the water, their father called for emergency assistance at 1:27 p.m, according to a Facebook post from fire officials. His children, who are both about 20, were calling out for aid when kayakers who were close by heard them.

The kayakers gave them their personal floatation devices while they waited for officials to get to the scene. The Milford Fire Department had both land and marine units respond, with the marine units arriving at about 1:43 p.m., officials wrote.

After the swimmers were rescued at Charles Island Sand Bar, one swimmer was sent to Milford Hospital to be evaluated, according to officials.
