State trooper injured in crash in Lisbon

LISBON — A state trooper was injured in an accident Sunday after the suspect in an earlier car accident struck his police cruiser, officials say.

State Police say a preliminary report shows Troopers stationed at Troop E in Montville were dispatched to the area of Kinsman Hill Road just after noon on Sunday for a reported motor vehicle accident. Prior to their arrival, they said, it was learned that a red Chevy Cruz fled the scene of the accident.

“The victim in this collision reported injuries; however, the injuries sustained are unknown at this time,” police said.

After the initial accident, police said, a trooper observed a vehicle matching the description of the evading vehicle traveling to Jewitt City. They said the trooper activated his lights and sirens to attempt to stop the vehicle, which was traveling in his direction.

“As a result, the accused operator struck a state police cruiser in an attempt to flee,” police said. “As a result of this secondary collision, the involved Trooper sustained injuries and was transported to an area hospital for further evaluation.”

State police said the extent of the trooper’s injuries is unknown, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Officials said the driver was identified as Joshua Young, a 31-year-old Norwich man, adding he was later apprehended and transported to the state police barracks for processing. They said a release and booking photograph would be distributed later Sunday evening.
