MIDDLETOWN — The South Green was a sea of festive faces Friday night, during the kickoff of Holiday on Main, a five-day tradition that heralds the start of the holiday season in Middletown.

The evening, sponsored by the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce, included antique tractor-drawn cart rides, a carol sin with the Middletown high and Beman middle schools, a parade to the South Green led by the mayor and Santa Claus, followed by three tree lightings.

The big moment was when the twinkling lights were lit, after a countdown, on the 90-foot spruce tree, followed by two others: on the top of the chamber building, and finally, the front of Eli Cannon’s Tap Room.

At one point during the cold, damp evening, some spied snowflakes falling from the sky. Popcorn and hot pretzels were served by members of the The Kiwanis Club of Middletown and Middletown High School students sold treats at the Dragons booth.
