FAIRFIELD — A Congress Street man is facing charges after police said he drove off the road, hit a utility pole, and continued to drive with two flat tires.
Mark Bento, 60, was charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, failure to drive right, and having an unsecured load in this Ford F350 pickup truck.
According to police, Bento first went off the road and hit a rock and then two dogwood trees, knocking them down. He then hit the utility pole on Congress Street and when he backed up, some of the wood in the truck bed fell out, police said.
The accident flattened both tires on the passenger side of the truck and Bento left gouge marks on North Street. He was stopped southbound on Black Rock Turnpike near Hemlock Road. Bento failed field sobriety tests. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and released from police custody on a promise to appear in court Nov 28.
