Born in New York City, he was the son of the late A. Stuart and Helen Peabody. A Fairfield resident for the last 15 years, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A graduate of Millbrook School of Millbrook, N.Y., where he was captain of the football team, and of Williams College of Williamstown, N.H., his career in advertising spanned many years. He was employed by Young & Rubicam Inc. of New York, Frankfurt, Germany, and Asia, retiring as creative director. He became general manager of the Frankfurt office in 1967. Later, he was regional director of Young & Rubicam's offices in Asia. Following his retirement, he established and ran his own advertising company, Peabody Corners Inc. of Hillsdale, N.Y.
He served as an alumni head fundraiser for Williams College for his Class of 1950. He was an avid baseball fan, especially for the Cincinnati Reds. He loved drawing cartoons for the people in his life.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Melinda Peabody of Raleigh, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Lee Peabody of Hayward, Calif.; three stepchildren, Molly S. Meader and her husband, David, of Kensington, Calif., Alexandra B. McCauley and her husband, Daniel, of Sebastopol, Calif., and John G. Bill and his wife, Keri, of Trumbull; seven grandchildren, Grier and Tyler Blumenschine, Oscar and Shea McCauley, Bridget and Kieran Bill, and Korty Meader; and a nephew, Peter Hazzard of Nashua, N.H. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey Peabody of Hayward, Calif., and a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Hap Hazzard of Savannah, Ga.
Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road.
