Absentee ballots for the Aug. 12 primary are now available in the Town Clerk's office, according to Town Clerk Betsy Browne.

Balloting for contested nominations for state offices will take place from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day.

A registered voter can use an absentee ballot for any of the following reasons: the voter will be out of town during all the hours of voting; their illness or disability prevents them from voting in person, or religious tenets prohibit secular activity on primary day.

To obtain an absentee ballot, an application for a ballot first must be signed and filed with the Town Clerk before a ballot is issued.

Applications are available at the Town Clerk's office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applications also can be downloaded at http://1.usa.gov/1rxqBm3 and sent to the Town Clerk at 611 Old Post Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.

The Town Clerk's office will be open extra hours on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon, for absentee balloting.
