Edwin Diaz, 47, of Canfield Street in Bridgeport, stole a moped from the downtown train station Thursday morning, and then borrowed a screwdriver from a Mill Plain Road resident in an attempt to start the motor, police said.

Diaz was charged with first-degree criminal trover and third-degree larceny, and was held on a $10,000 bond.

Police received a call shortly before 8:30 a.m. from a Mill Plain Road resident reporting that Diaz knocked on the door and said he had lost the keys to his moped and needed to borrow a screwdriver. After the caller's husband lent the man a screwdriver, she said they saw Diaz on the sidewalk, tinkering with the moped's ignition. They became suspicious and called police.

Officers sent to the scene determined Diaz did not own the moped, valued at $2,600. During a search, they also said they found him in possession of two crack pipes and he was subsequently charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Diaz is scheduled to appear July 2 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
