After woman falls on icy sidewalk, downtown property owner issued ticket
A downtown property owner was issued a $99 infraction for failing to properly clear snow and ice from the sidewalk in front of his building after a 79-year-old woman slipped and fell Saturday.
The woman, accompanied by her daughter, who also fell, weren't injured but contacted police so the hazardous condition could be addressed, according to the report.
Elefterios Jordanopoulos, 80, who lives on Congress Street, owns the building at 1873 Post Road. When officers arrived, they said snow on the sidewalk had been trampled on, melted and then refroze after the storm late last week.
A message was left for Jordanopoulos, who later contacted police and said he'd put rock salt on the sidewalk. According to the report, he also became angry, saying he pays taxes and was being treated "like a second-class citizen."
Jordanopolous met officers at the building, and began chopping at the ice. He was then issued the ticket for violating the town ordinance that requires sidewalks be cleared within 24 hours after a snow storm.
