Andrew J. Hovanec, 85, of Fairfield, husband of the late Bessie S. Hovanec, died July 6 in St. Vincent's Medical Center, Bridgeport.

Born in Bridgeport, he was the son of the late Emil and Susan Hovanec and had been a Fairfield resident more than 50 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific.

He was a retired machinist for the Locke Manufacturing Co. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, where he was a member of the Men's League and Men's Bowling League.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Pauline Bodnar and her husband James of Fairfield; nieces and nephews, including the Rev. Raymond Scherba of Danbury, James Bodnar and his wife Karen of Trumbull, Nancy Nadolny and her husband David of Fairfield, Linda Bernstein and her husband David of Fairfield, Michael Bodnar of Fairfield and Elaine Mortensen; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, John Hovanec; a sister, Ann Dempkowski and a nephew, Stanley Dempkowski.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, with his nephew, the Rev. Raymond Scherba, officiating. Friends may greet the family on Saturday, from 10 to 11 a.m., in the funeral home prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be in Lawncroft Cemetery.
