It didn't work the first time.

For the second time in recent weeks, the Spic & Span Market, 329 Pequot Ave., received a call from a man claiming to be from United Illuminating and threatening to shut off electrical service to the store if payment of the debt was not made immediately.

The call came from 203-992-9789, according to the report, but the number was deactivated when police tried to call it.

Sgt. Suzanne Lussier said there have been several recent reports of similar phone scams, with callers claiming to be from Galaxy Fitness, U.I., Microsfoft and Cablevision, using similar tactics by demanding payment of supposedly unpaid bills. The intended victims are told by the scammers to purchase pre-paid credit cards, and call back with the credit card numbers in order to pay their bills quickly.
