Aureliu (Reli) D. Ciufecu, 88, of Fairfield, died May 23.

Born in Pleasa, Albania, he was raised in Romania and educated in Italy before coming to the United States in 1953, where he resided in Bridgeport as well as Fairfield. He was language professor and also taught history at Gateway Community College in New Haven, and also had taught at Yale University, the University of Bridgeport, Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University.

He was a longtime member of St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, a past president of both the St. Dimitrie Church Council and the Society Farsarotul; was an honorary consul for the Romanian Consulate, and an organizer of the bi-annual Macedonian-Romanian Cultural Congress. In his youth, he was an avid tennis player and later coached soccer for the former South Central Community College. He was also a fan of theater and music.

Survivors include his son, Mita Ciufecu and his wife Lisa of North Franklin; daughters Catrina Ciufecu and her partner Richard Sutcliffe of Stratford and Valeria Ciufecu Broadley of Milford; grandchildren Raymond and Amanda Ciufecu and Michele Broadley; sisters Stella Berlovan-Ciufecu of Italy and Liza Puiu of Romania; several nieces and nephews; his former wife Haroula Dobyns, and former son in law Adrian Broadley. He was predeceased by brothers Leti and Todi Ciufecu.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 27, in St. Dimitrie Romanian Orthodox Church, 504 Sport Hill Road, Easton. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport. Calling hours will be Thursday, May 26, from 4 to 8 p.m., in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road.
