The football season is over, but the yelling and screaming doesn´t have to be. It´s time to officially shift gears from the gridiron to the basketball court.

The Bulldog football team ended its season Saturday in Lubbock where Stephenville pulled out a thrilling 26-23 double-overtime victory over Plainview in the Class 4A Division I state quarterfinals. The Dogs ended their remarkable season at 12-1.

The only team in the Herald´s readership area still playing football is the Valley Patriots, who this week take on Meadow in the state semifinals. That game between two 13-0 teams is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Lubbock´s Lowrey Field.

Basketball takes center stage this weekend when the Plainview Lions Pioneer Classic is held at Hutcherson Center. That event will see the Plainview Bulldogs - now playing with a complete team as the football players make the transition to basketball - and Wayland Baptist Pioneers hosting exciting high school and college hoops action beginning Thursday and continuing through Saturday.

But first, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs will host Coronado at The DogHouse on Tuesday with the varsity girls (2-5) and J.V. boys playing at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity boys (1-2) and J.V. girls around 7:30.

Also Tuesday, Plainview Christian hosts four games at the Eagle´s Nest against Patton Springs starting at 4 p.m. while the Wayland Flying Queens (3-2) play at Houston Baptist at 7:30.

Plainview Christian teams participate in a tournament at Patton Springs starting Thursday while the Queens are in Pueblo, Colo., for the Colorado State-Southern Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the Lady Dogs go to Lubbock Monterey to meet Odessa at 6 p.m.

A full slate of 7th, 8th and 9th grade games are on tap today with many of those teams in tournaments later in the week, including the Plainview J.V. Boys Tournament on Thursday-Saturday.
