Bicyclist injured in Reef Road fall; collision report discounted
A 70-year-old woman riding a bicycle on Reef Road Thursday suffered minor injuries when she apparently fell off the bike, police said, contrary to initial reports that she had been struck by a van.
"At this point, we believe that she just lost control and fell," Sgt. Suzanne Lussier said later Thursday afternoon. "There were no witnesses that saw the truck make contact with the bicyclist."
Lussier said accident investigators could not find any marks on the truck to indicate it collided with the cyclist. The van, which did not stop at the scene, was later located on One Rod Highway.
The incident remains under investigation.
The bicyclist, a Fairfield resident, was wearing a helmet at the time of the mishap, Lussier said. She was taken to the hospital, but had only minor injuries.
The collision took place about noon near Bud's Deli.
Traffic on Reef Road was shut down briefly while police investigated the accident, but was reopened by about 12:30 p.m.
Last month, another bicyclist -- 68-year-old Elizabeth Lucas of Fairfield Beach Road -- died from head injuries she suffered when she collided with a pickup truck at Rowland Road and Paulding Place.
