Bigelow Challenge race, community events Sept. 25

The 24th annual Bigelow Tea Community Challenge -- a 5K road race, a 2-mile noncompetitive Fitness Walk and a Kids' Fun Run -- will take place Sunday, Sept. 25, at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Southport.
The event, which genewrally attracts more than 1,000 participants, takes place rain or shine.
The Kids' Fun Run starts at 9 a.m., followed by the 2-mile Fitness Walk at 9:30 a.m. and the 5K road race at 10:10 a.m. An awards ceremony is planned for about 10:30 a.m.
The Bigelow event, sponsored by the Fairfield-based makers of "Constant Comment" tea and other blends, raised more than $90,000 last year, making a total of $600,000 since it began. Proceeds raised will be distributed to state charities, including the Bridgeport Rescue Mission, Burroughs Community Center, Cardinal Shehan Center, Caroline House, Center for Women & Families, Connecticut Food Bank, Fairfield Senior Center, Fairfield YMCA, Grasmere by the Sea Eldercare Center, Janus House, Mercy Learning Center, Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County, Operation Hope, Sandcastle Playground, and Wakeman Boys & Girls Club.
There are three ways to register: Online anytime at www.bigelowtea.com; on Saturday, Sept. 24, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Fairfield YMCA, and on the day of the event at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, 385 Center St., where signups will be accepted starting at 8 a.m.
Registration fees will include a free t-shirt for the first 1,000 registrants, a gift bag, after-race refreshments, and a chance to win raffle prizes.
