A book drive to collect children's books is under way at SportsPlex and continues through June 11 at the Mill Plain Road Fitness Center.

The drive is sponsored by the Junior League of Eastern Fairfield County as part of its Leaguers Building Readers literacy program.

The organization is collecting gently used books suitable for children from birth to eighth grade, the league said in a news release.

Collection bins have been placed throughout SportsPlex at 85 Mill Plain Road, the league said. Books will be distributed for needy children through the league's partnership with Read to Grow Inc., a nonprofit supported by the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County.

Read to Grow distributes more than 100,000 books annually for free to the needy, according to the release.

The book drive is in conjunction with the SportsPlex Family Fun Day on Sunday, June 10. This year, the league said, more than 6,000 books have been donated to its literacy effort.
