A man wanted for murder in Brazil was picked up by Fairfield police Saturday and held for agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

A sergeant on patrol spotted a vehicle matching the description of one being sought by ICE in the parking lot of the Fitness Edge on Kings Highway Cut-off around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. A police detective went into the gym to confirm that the man, Helio Nogueira-Santos, 44, was inside. Shortly after that Nogueira-Santos and another man, Jefferson Wagner Damasio Perelira, 33, came out of the gym, got into the vehicle and drove to New England Avenue, where they were stopped by police.

Nogueira-Santos, who was living on Elmwood Avenue in Bridgeport, was a passenger in the car driven by Perelira, and both were taken into custody.

Perelira was charged with misuse of license plates, failure to insure, failure to register and driving without a license.

Nogueira-Santos was held without bond until he was picked by ICE agents Monday morning.
