The 2012 Connecticut Challenge bike ride in July raised a record $1.6 million to support cancer survivorship programs, the Southport-based nonprofit has announced.

Nearly 1,100 cyclists from 19 states participated in the July 28 fundraising ride, which started and finished at the Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport.

The top fundraising riders from Fairfield were Michael Sargent, who raised $33,898, and Jonathan Slavin, who brought in $22,970.

Proceeds from the ride support the organization's Center for Survivorship, which opened in Southport in the fall offering programs in exercise, nutrition and psychosocial support.
