The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of Fairfield will host a kickoff celebration for the 2013 relay season from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road.

The event will feature event volunteers and participants celebrating the previous year's achievements and discussing plans for the coming year.

The relay is an overnight walk-a-thon that brings together residents from Fairfield, Easton and Bridgeport in the fight against cancer as teams raise money in the months leading up to the event. At the relay, the teams set up campsites and take turns walking the track overnight and enjoying entertainment, activities and ceremonies throughout the night.

More than 2,100 registered participants on more than 200 teams helped to raise $327,000 at last year's relay, the third largest amount raised in more than 250 relays in the society's New England division and the most in Connecticut.

The 2013 relay is set for Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9, at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Teams with at least five people registered before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, will be entered into a prize drawing at the celebration.
