FAIRFIELD — A Black Rock Turnpike man was charged with driving under the influence after he drove off North Benson Road and rolled his car April 22.

William Pickard, 56, was also charged with traveling unreasonably fast and failure to drive right after the one-car accident Saturday night.

According to police, Pickard was driving north on North Benson Road when he failed to negotiate a sharp curve in the road. He crossed over to the other side of the street, hit the curb, and then went down a six- to eight-foot embankment. The car rolled over and came to rest on its roof about 20 feet north of the roadway.

Pickard had climbed out of the car by the time officers arrived. He failed field sobriety tests and was released on a $100 bond. Pickard is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Bridgeport on May 1.
