A business that has been owned and operated by the same family for more than 30 years, Chaves Bakery has opened a new bakery in Fairfield at 401 Kings Highway.

Known for their Portuguese , bread, rolls and custard cups, which Marlene Chaves called "our signature items," the Chaves family's Fairfield store is a full-service bakery that carries Portuguese, Italian and French baked goods.

The Fairfield bakery opened March 7, and offers a variety of breads, pastries, cookies and doughnuts, custom-made cakes including wedding cakes, plus a deli and self-service beverage area.

The headquarters for the business is at the family's bakery on State Street in Bridgeport, and trucks bring freshly baked goods to the Fairfield bakery from there, Chaves said. Her husband, her in-laws and her brother-in-law all work in the family business.

The other Chaves bakeries are on East Main Street in Bridgeport, Monroe and two Ambrosia bakeries owned by the family in Stratford and Milford. The family recently sold its bakeries in Shelton and Seymour, according to Marlene Chaves.

The family works hard to provide consistently high-quality baked goods at all their locations, she said.

"Running a bakery isn't just putting a flower on a cake. It's hard work," she said.

Inside the Fairfield store, there are racks of breads and rolls behind the counter, and freshly decorated cakes in a revolving case. The deli counter offers breakfast and lunch sandwiches to go, and everything from a giant sub sandwich for a football game to a child's birthday cake can be ordered.

She also plans to add seating inside the bakery so customers can enjoy their baked goods and sandwiches on the premises.

The Fairfield bakery's hours are Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. For information or to place an order, call 203-908-3877.
