College student allegedly helps, then hinders, Fairfield police
FAIRFIELD — Police said a Fairfield University student, who at first was a good Samaritan, later threw a beer bottle at cops responding to his call about a possible overdose at the downtown train station early Sunday morning.
Benjamin Wignall, 22, called police around 3:30 a.m. about the possible overdose. They arrived to find a group of people on the New Haven-bound platform. A woman and her son were on a bench, and it was the son who had apparently taken drugs. As officers tried to gather information from the woman, they said Wignall kept interrupting and blocking the officers. After the woman and her son were sent on an ambulance to the hospital, Wignall started to walk down the ramp to the parking lot, carrying a case of beer. Several of the beer bottles fell, and when Wignall got to his car, police said, he threw a beer bottle at the officers. The bottle shattered, but the cops were not injured.
Wignall was given an summons for disorderly conduct and released on a promise to appear in state Superior Court in Bridgeport.
