Congregation Beth El will host its 2nd annual Kosher BBQ Championship and Crafts Fair on Aug. 30.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the synagogue’s grounds at 1200 Fairfield Woods Road.

Proceeds will benefit several area charities, including Operation Hope, the Fairfield Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation, Jewish Senior Services, Mikey’s Way and the Federation for Jewish Philanthropy of Upper Fairfield County.

The barbecuing competition will pit 25 teams from around the nation, beginning at sundown Saturday and overnight until they submit their entries Sunday morning, when judging will take place for best kosher BBQ brisket, beef ribs and chicken.

To adhere to kosher guidelines, according to Beth El’s publicity, fires will be lit by a masgiach, who supervises kosher status.

Catering for the event will be provided by Texas-born pit boss Ari White, the “Wandering Que,” with years of experience with kosher Texas BBQ, according to organizers.

DJ’ing the event will be Starlight Express, plus live entertainment throughout the day, including the Roylety Steel Pan Band, led by Jim Royle.

There also will be hot-dog- and pickle-eating contests, a play-zone with inflatables and a crafts fair.
