Cops: Man assaulted wife while driving in Fairfield
A Bridgeport man was arrested after witnesses reported they saw him punching a woman Tuesday morning as the couple drove on Black Rock Turnpike.
Police received several calls about the alleged assault, including one from an off-duty Bridgeport police officer traveling behind the Chevy Impala driven by Robert Scott Jr., 31, of Remington Street. He told dispatchers he saw the driver strike the female passenger -- who turned out to be Scott's wife -- several times, then stop the car and get out.
At that point, the woman jumped into the driver's seat and sped off. The Bridgeport officer stayed with Scott until police arrived.
Fairfield officers got the cell phone number of Scott's wife, called her, and she returned to the scene and gave a statement. She had a cut a on the side of her neck, just below her ear, according to the police report.
The couple's 2-year-old and 5-month-old children were in the car at the time of assault, police said.
Scott was charged with third-degree assault and two counts of risk of injury to a minor. He was held on a $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear Wednesday in Bridgeport Superior Court. A protective order was also issued for his wife.
