A Bridgeport man picked up for shoplifting in Fairfield last Friday was also wanted by Waterbury police on escape charges, according to reports.

Javier Saez, 44, who last known address was Boston Avenue in Bridgeport, was arrested at Super Stop & Shop, 760 Villa Ave., after he tried to leave the store with a shopping cart filled with $305 worth of unpaid merchandise, police said. When Saez saw a police officer, he ran back into the store and tried to hide in the men's room, police said.

Throughout the booking process, police said Saez repeatedly gave his name as "Alex Sanchez," and also gave a fake date of birth. However, his real identity was discovered after he was fingerprinted, police said.

According to police, the parole office in Waterbury had a warrant for Saez' arrest on escape charges.

Fairfield police charged Saez with second-degree forgery, criminal impersonation, sixth-degree larceny and interfering with police. He was transferred to the State Police barracks in Colchester in connection with the Waterbury warrant and is scheduled to appear July 9 in Bridegport Superior Court.
