Police are looking for a man who they say broke into a Berkeley Road home and sexually assaulted a Sacred Heart University student early Monday.

In addition to the sexual assault, the woman suffered other physical injuries during the attack, police said. She had to be treated at a hospital, but was later released.

Police Lt. Michael Gagner, who heads the police Detective Bureau, said the woman described her assailant as a short, stocky male in his 20s with a Spanish accent. She said the man is between 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall and has dark, spiked hair.

The incident, reported to police about 3 a.m. Monday, took place after the man broke into the Berkeley Road home the woman shares with several roommates. They were not at home at the time of the incident, according to the report.

State Police helped process the crime scene Monday, dusting for fingerprints. Fairfield police, however, are leading the investigation.

Police have distributed an artist's sketch of the suspect and ask that anyone with information call 203-254-4840. Anonymous tips can be texted to 274637.
