Cops: Woman swiped vanilla extract to spike coffee
A Jarvis Court woman was arrested Saturday after police said she stole six bottles of vanilla extract from Super Stop & Shop on Kings Highway Cutoff, allegedly to add an alcoholic kick to her coffee.
Patricia Nelson, 63, told officers she wanted the bottles of the sweet flavoring for her coffee to "become intoxicated," according to the report. Cost of the six bottles was $59.94, according to the report.
Under FDA regulations, pure vanilla extract must have 35 percent alcohol content, as well as 13.35 ounces of vanilla bean per gallon.
According to the report, store employees saw Nelson put the small bottles of vanilla into her purse. She then went to a cashier and paid for two frozen dinners, a bottle of Gatorade and a carton of cream, but not the vanilla extract. She was detained by store personnel as she was leaving the supermarket.
Nelson was charged with sixth-degree larceny and released on a promise to appear March 9 at state Superior Court in Bridgeport.
