Cougar hockey team captures championship

EAST ALTON — The Southern Illinois University Edwarsdville Cougar ice hockey team recently captured the Division II Silver Tier championship with a 5-4 victory over Robert Morris College of Springfield.

The Cougars, who went from worst to first in one season, got two

goals from Sean Walls and one apiece from Joe DiMaggio, Joe Schmitt

and Scott Walker to win the Mid American Collegiate Hockey

Association title.

With Morris College leading 4-3 with 3:41 remaining in the third

period, Walls scored his second goal of the game to tie the score and

set up a furious finish.

Walker scored the game-winner with 1:37 remaining to give the

Cougars the championship.

SIUE goalie Patrick Day made 41 stops in the game to post the

victory. Walls, meanwhile, was voted the playoff's most valuable

player.
