A Bridgeport couple was charged with shoplifting groceries from Super Stop & Shop, 1160 Kings Highway.
Jesse Lewis, 32, and Rebecca Lewis, 37, both of Cleveland Avenue, were charged with sixth-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. They were released on a promise to appear Feb. 19 at state Superior Court in Bridgeport.
According to the report, the couple was using one of the store's self-scan pricing devices, but were scanning only some of the groceries. Items that weren't scanned were placed in the shopping cart underneath the scanned merchandise, according to the report. They then went to a self check-out lane, and paid for $96 worth of groceries and left the store without paying for the rest that totaled $224, police said.
Confronted by security personnel in the parking lot, Jesse Lewis at first refused to come back into the store, according to the report, and complied only after being told the police had been contacted. They were able to keep the $96 worth of groceries for which they had paid, police said.
