FAIRFIELD — Some suspicious items that caused concern at Roger Ludlowe Middle School this morning turned out to be homemade curling stones.

The items, first reported to police around 8 a.m. Wednesday, were in the rear parking lot of the middle school on Unquowa Road.

“After a preliminary investigation, the items were presumed to be home-made curling stones, as used in the winter Olympic sport of Curling,” according to a statement from the Police Department. “Although the items were presumed to be harmless, all proper procedures were followed to confirm the true nature and ensure the safe removal of the items.”

During the investigation, students and staff were relocated to the gum while the items were disposed of by maintenance staff, according to police. Once the curling stones were removed, school operations returned to normal.
