Helen D'Avanzo, most recently a member of the Representative Town Meeting in District 8, has been appointed by First Selectman Michael Tetreau to serve as town treasurer.

"Mrs. D'Avanzo brings a wealth of financial and community knowledge to this important role," Tetreau said. "In these difficult economic times, we are fortunate to have such a high caliber individual serve our town."

D'Avanzo replaces Sheryl Shaughnessey, whose term expired in November. The primary duty of the town treasurer is to serve as a member of the town's Bond Committee along with the Board of Selectmen and the fiscal officer who are responsible for executing and analyzing all borrowings for the town. It is not a paid position.

"I am honored to continue my service to Fairfield," D'Avanzo said.

Her professional experience includes serving as a project manager at Market Data Retrieval; a marketing analysis consultant at Reader's Digest Young Families; a senior auditor with Defense Contract Audit agency and as an administrative officer and senior tax auditor with the IRS.

In addition to serving on the RTM, D'Avanzo also completed an unexpired term on the Board of Finance. She is a board member for Operation Hope and Friends of the Fairfield Library, local coordinator for the TaxAide Program at the Fairfield Senior Center and a member of the League of Women Voters. In 2006 she received the Eunice Postol Community Service Award from the Democratic Town Committee.

D'Avanzo has a bachelor's degree in political science from Molloy College and a masters in taxation from the University of New Haven. She received her accounting concentration from the University of Maine.

Shaughnessey was appointed in 2007 to finish the term of the late Edward Gleason.
