Deborah L. Tumey, a longtime resident of Fairfield and Westport, died Feb. 28, 2010, in a house fire in her home in Meredith, N.H.

Born on May 26, 1949, in Sacramento, Calif., she was resident of Fairfield and fraduated of Roger Ludlowe High School in 1967. She attended The St. Francis School of Nursing,graduated with a nursing degree in 1970 and became a registered nurse.

Tumey began her career at Carolton Chronic & Convalescent Hospital in Fairfield, followed by a long career in public health nursing in both upstate Connecticut and New York. She eventually worked for New York Life Insurance of New York.

Once retired, she was very active socially. She was the co-president of the American Women's Club in London in the 1980s and later was PTA co-president in Westport.

From 1997 until the end of 2009, Tumey was the owner and proprietor of the Smoke House restaurant in Weirs Beach, N.H.

She is survived by her son, Colin R. Tumey; her mother, Dorothy Spyker of Meredith, N.H.; and her brothers, Craig Pearson of Tampa Bay, Fla., and Robert Pearson of Huntington.

A memorial service is planned for Memorial Day weekend in New Hampshire. Contributions in her name may be sent to The Nature Conservancy.
