Dr. Joseph P. Giglio, 94 of Fairfield, the husband of Marie N. Giglio, died June 22, 2010.

Born in Vittoria, Sicily, to the late Salvatore and Bartolina Giglio, he was a Fairfield resident for more than 14 years. A U.S. Army veteran, he served in World War II.

During his childhood, Giglio was trained as an artist and was offered a scholarship to study in Paris. However, he decided to follow his other passion -- medicine. He received his doctorate degree from Marquette University and maintained his own practice as a general surgeon in Garden City, Long Island. He also taught anatomy for 20 years at the Poly Clinic, formerly in Manhattan.

Upon his retirement, Giglio resumed his love of art and spent many years painting, with concentrations in the Renaissance and the Classics.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Stephen A. Giglio and his wife, Ellen of Manhattan.

A memorial Mass will take place on Friday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 700 Old Stratfield Road, Fairfield; interment will be private.
