Jeffrey Nielsen, 43, of French Street, was charged with driving under the influence, failure to drive right, and failure to carry insurance after he crashed his car into a utility pole on River Street around 9 p.m. Friday night.
Nielsen told police the accident was caused as tried to avoid hitting a deer. The pole was snapped in half and Nielsen's car came to a stop atop the broken base of the pole. His speech was slurred and he failed field sobriety tests, police said.
He initially refused medical treatment but after being brought to headquarters, he asked to go to the hospital. After he was booked, he was released on a promise to appear Sept. 17 in Bridgeport Superior Court. He was then taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center in Bridgeport.
