DVDs: 'Fred Claus'

116 minutes. Rated PG.

Fred Claus (Vince Vaughn) is the older brother of Nicholas (Paul Giamatti), aka Santa Claus, and he grew up in the shadow of his saintly sibling. He rebelled many years ago by running away from home and becoming a repo man. Vaughn uses his motormouth charm to barely mask the fact that he is desperate for approval and attention. Meanwhile, Giamatti embodies desperation, and though he may seem a strange choice for jolly old Saint Nick, he is perfect in the role. He brings a nice edge to a character who could become boring in his good-heartedness. Extras include deleted scenes and commentary from director David Dobkin.
