Representative Town Meeting member Heather Dean, D-4, has announced plans to run for state representative in the 134th District, challenging incumbent Republican Tony Hwang.

Dean, in her fourth term on the RTM, announced her candidacy March 31 at the Pious Bird of Good Omen, a store in the Brick Walk shopping center as a way to underscore her commitment to small business.

"I chose this location because this eclectic shop is an example of a thriving, small business," Dean said.

Currently a member of the RTM's Finance Committee, Dean has also served on the Public Works and Planning Committee. She got started in public service as a member of the Osborn Hill School PTA. In 2011, she received the U.S. Presidential Volunteer Service award from the Osborn Hill PTA.

"Heather Dean has served the town of Fairfield with energy, commitment and passion," First Selectman and fellow Democrat Michael Tetreau said in a statement, while state Rep. Kim Fawcett, D-133, said, "Heather is a dynamic leader who is connected to our community and schools."

Dean holds degrees from Sacred Heart University and the University of Connecticut.

"I am proud of my reputation as a committed, bipartisan public servant who rolls up her sleeves to get the job done," Dean said, pledging to bring a collaborative leadership style to the General Assembly in Hartford.

The 134th District encompasses parts of Fairfield and Trumbull.
