Doris Halliwell Sharkey, 92, a former resident of Fairfield, died Thursday April 14.

Born Aug. 3, 1918, in Newark, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Charles H.J. Halliwell Jr. and Emma Stemmler Halliwell. She earned a bachelor's degree from Rosemont College in 1938 and worked for five years as a radio advertising buyer with the Young and Rubicam advertising agency in New York.

She and her husband, the late Thomas Dunne Sharkey, had eight children and in 1971 moved to Fairfield. After her husband's death in 1979, she returned to the University of Bridgeport to pursue a master's degree and became a certified grief counselor in 1981. For the next 20 years she worked with Theos and the Diocese of Bridgeport. She spent the last 10 years of her life at Essex Meadows in Essex.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Kevin Sharkey.

She is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Eileen Sharkey of Stamford, Heather and David Kostka of Colts Neck, N.J., Maura and Tod Eagle of Brockport, N.Y., and Mary Lee and Joseph Gaffney of Hamden; three sons and their wives, Thomas and Eileen Sharkey of Andover, Mass., Brian Sharkey and Lorraine Lombardi of Bloomfield, N.J., and J. Brendan Sharkey of Hamden; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place April 18 at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church in Hartford. Burial was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, N.J. Arrangements were handled by Robinson Wright & Weymer Funeral Home.
