David Bennewitz, 25, of Weston, was charged with driving under the influence around 1:40 a.m. Friday after he allegedly was seen driving erratically on the Post Road near Mill Plain Road.

He made an abrupt stop at a traffic light, according to police, and also drove into the road shoulder several times. Bennewitz, who had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, failed a field sobriety testing, according to Sgt. Suzanne Lussier, a Fairfield police spokeswoman. When questioned by police, he allegedly admitted to having had three beers at the Seagrape Cafe on Reef Road.

Released on $100 bond, Bennewitz is scheduled to appear April 19 in Bridgeport Superior Court.
