An unconscious driver was hospitalized after being extricated from his heavily damaged car that collided with a box truck early Monday on Black Rock Turnpike.

Robert Jones, 28, of Chestnut Street, was traveling west on Burroughs Road when he collided shortly after 3 a.m. Monday with a box truck belonging A&M Bronx Bakery of Mount Vernon, N.Y., at the road's intersection with Black Rock Turnpike, police said. There is a traffic --flashing red at the time of the crash -- at the intersection.

Firefighters used the jaws-of-life tool to free Jones from the damaged car, and he was taken to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment of what were described as serious injuries, according to the report.

The driver of the truck was not injured and declined medical treatment, according to firefighters.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. No charges were filed immediately.
