At a little after 4 p.m., the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a call that a car on the "high side of Samp Mortar Drive near the dam" had reportedly hit a tree and "flipped over" with the driver still in the vehicle. Fire Department Engine 2, Ladder 2, Rescue 1 and Car 3 responded and were on the scene within several minutes, reporting that the vehicle was on its side with a female driver conscious but trapped inside, and extrication equipment would be required to remove her.

After securing the vehicle in place with cribbing arriving rescue and ladder companies deployed their hydraulic rescue tools to cut the roof completely off of the vehicle, a late model silver Jaguar, in order to gain access to the patient. After securing her to a backboard, the driver was transferred to an AMR ambulance which transported her to St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport. Fire crews secured other hazards before clearing the scene in half an hour.
