EMILY TABOR BRENNAN

Emily Tabor Brennan, age 95, died July 18, 2010 with family by her side, in the Carolton Chronic and Convalescent Hospital in Fairfield. She was the wife of the late Daniel E. Brennan Sr. (1913-1985) and mother of the late Daniel E. Brennan Jr. (1942-2007).

Born in Watervliet, NY, she was the daughter of Nanita (Netty) Veronica MacKinnion and Harry Bishop Tabor. Emily graduated from the Academy of Our Lady of Mercy Lauralton Hall and the University of Southern Connecticut. Prior to her marriage, she lived on her own and taught in Stratford. Survivors include her daughter Dorothea E. Brennan of Fairfield, daughter-in-law Ruth G. Brennan, grandchildren Danna Van Brandt and her husband Joachim and Benjamin T. Brennan and his fiancée Rachael Gardner, her Brennan niece, nephews and their children and grandchildren, and her cousins. In addition to her husband and son, she was predeceased by her sister Dorothea Elizabeth Tabor (1917-1926).

Emily and Dan met on a blind date at age 14 and 16. It was love at first sight with marriage 12 years later. Emily inherited her love of travel from her parents. In 1931, age 16, she traveled alone, by train, to visit her future husband at Notre Dame for a football game and dance. After Dan's death, rather than spend money on counseling, Emily signed up for a month-long trip to Australia. For her 75th birthday she went on a cruise down the Nile and a safari in Kenya. At age 78, with a metal plate in her hip from a fall and a cast on her arm from a recent fall, she went to Israel with the family for her granddaughter's Bat Mitzvah on Masada.

She split her time between Sun City Center, Florida and Bridgeport, until a stroke in 2001. Over the last nine years as her health declined, Emily continued to be a good friend and an incredible role model. At each stage of her need for additional care, she anticipated it and made decisions about the next transition with an eye on how to make it easier for her family. Emily exhibited the rare combination of grace and determination. She and her beloved Dan played bridge, loved to dance, spent summers at the Holiday Beach Club in Fairfield. Her grandchildren referred to her as "Beach Grandma," she traveled, entertained friends and worked tirelessly on behalf of the greater Bridgeport community and Fairfield University. Emily was the founding president of the Ladies Guild of St. Pius X, and President of the Mother's Club of the North End Boys (and Girls) Club, the Bellarmine Guild of Fairfield Prep, Junior Guild and The Council of Catholic Women, and, as a senior, was a long time volunteer at Bridgeport Hospital.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m., at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 149 South Pine Creek Road, Fairfield, with a mass of Christian burial followed by entombment in St. Michael's Cemetery Mausoleum, Stratford. Friends may call July 23 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Redgate-Hennessy Funeral Home, Main Street and Gorham Place, Trumbull.
