Several houses in the 600 block of Fairfield Beach Road were evacuated as a precaution Monday afternoon after a construction crew ruptured a gas line.
A crew working at 605 Fairfield Beach Road struck a gas line while digging with a piece of construction equipment shortly before 4 p.m., prompting evacuation of seven to eight houses in the neighborhood. Both vehicular and pedestrian traffic were also banned from the immediate area.
Fire and police officials received numerous calls about a gas odor throughout the neighborhood after the line broke.
Officials used the reverse 911 system to alert residents of the immediate Fairfield Beach Road area as well as lower Reef and Rowland roads and Edward Street about the incident.
A repair crew from Southern Connecticut Gas was also on the scene, and by about 4:50 p.m. the gas leak was shut down. Gas service to three houses was turned off for the time being while repairs were made to the broken line.
