Corona sets Air Force Academy record

Former Fairfield Prep runner Patrick Corona recently became the first U.S. Air Force runner to break the four-minute mile and the second Connecticut resident ever to break that mark. The senior cadet hit the tape in 3:59.77 during the AF Invitational meet in the USAF Academy in Colorado.

Carona, from Fairfield, is currently ranked as the No. 1 miler in the country by the NCAA. He is also the current NCAA Mountain West Conference 5000 meters outdoor champion. Carona’s time set a new Academy standard and cut nearly two seconds off of the senior class record that had stood since 1996.

At Prep, Corona was all-SCC and helped the Jesuits win the 2011 state cross country title. Ran the anchor leg of the 4x800-meter relay team that placed second in New England with a school record time of 7:50.
