Fairfield Police: Man tried to open account with fake document
FAIRFIELD — A New Jersey man was arrested Monday afternoon when he tried to open a bank account with a Social Security number that was not his.
Kenneth Daneyko, 22, whose last known address was in Chatham, N.J., was charged with criminal attempt at second-degree forgery and held on a $10,000 bond.
Police got a call from the TD Bank branch at 1643 Post Road about a man who had tried to open a new checking account with a fake Social Security number. The bank employees had been alerted to look out for Daneyko, who had been successful in doing the same thing at the bank’s Shelton branch.
While Fairfield employees called police, Daneyko filled out the paperwork for an account. His plan was to deposit a check from an account that actually had no funds in it and immediately withdraw money from the new account, using the ATM card.
Daneyko told police he was homeless. Several forged checks were found on the driver’s seat of his car.
He is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Bridgeport Feb. 6.
